On this day in history in:
1941 Nazi Germany's siege of Leningrad began on September 8, 1941, and lasted 900 days. Some citizens were forced to subsist on bread made from sawdust while others worked through the winter in makeshift military factories without heat. Although many perished from starvation, bombings, and the cold, the city's determined resistance held the German troops at bay and helped turn the tide of World War II. When the siege finally ended in January of 1944, Leningrad's population had been reduced from 2,500,000 million people to 600,000.
